What is currently happening at the SNG?

At the SNG we have many duties, tasks, and plans, which is why we continue to work tirelessly on various levels. We are grateful that most of you stand by us with understanding and support. We aim to repay you progressively with successful delivery of the gallery we all deserve – one filled with exhibitions and displays, equipped with all services and details, and offering art, education, relaxation, and entertainment. Here are some of the main tasks that we are currently engaged in:

undefined

  • New furniture is being added on daily basis to the gallery and administrative building, fitting out the exhibition spaces, relaxation areas, courtyard, and offices. The SNG café and Ex Libris bookstore are waiting for their interiors, and at present operate in pop-up form.
  • We are populating the repository with more than 80,000 artworks held in the SNG's collections. The process of relocating them is a challenging task; it takes time and care to move the artworks safely to their new locations.

undefined

  • In addition to the artworks, SNG employees are moving from their temporary base at the Hurban Barracks to the new administrative building.
  • Our conservators are busy preparing the artworks for display, relocation, or loan.

  • We are preparing the first two (from a total of six) displays, which you can look forward to at the end of June. They will showcase the most prominent artworks from the SNG collections on the themes of MODERN and SACRAL ART.
  • We are also preparing for the finals of Do you have knack for art? an international art competition for young people that will culminate in an exhibition of the finalists' entries on 4 May and announcement of the winners a day later. https://umeleckecrevo.sng.sk/
  • Since our (part-)opening in December, we have been delivering our popular guided tours of the reconstructed grounds of the SNG. They have been conducted in Slovak, English, and Slovak sign language, and have been enjoyed by hundreds of curious people. Since interest in the guided tours remains strong, we will continue to deliver them. Shortly, we will also provide guided access for the blind and visually impaired. https://www.sng.sk/sk/bratislava/programy

  • We continue to deliver events for preschools, primary schools, and secondary schools, which are fully booked until summer! In parallel, we work with children and young people on long-term creative courses.
  • Every third week, we broadcast a new episode of our SNG Podcast, featuring a range of interesting guests. To date, it has been listened to by more than 15,000 people. https://www.sng.sk/sk/o-galerii/podcast
  • We manage and communicate all necessary arrangements regarding SNG venue hire. We receive a lot of interest, so there is a lot of work to be done.
  • We engage in various collaborations to deliver rich events offerings at the SNG, thanks to which you can, for example, watch screenings of Cinema Lumière at the SNG Cinema.

undefined

  • With our Norwegian partner Sørlandets Kunstmuseum we are developing a project that explores how digital technologies can enhance the experience of a gallery visit. As part of the project, we created a prototype of the atlas.sng.sk mobile app that will introduce the stories behind the exhibited artworks and the most interesting places within the new SNG. https://www.sng.sk/en/research/projects/making-meaning-of-digital-collections

  • In cooperation with the Old Town, we are cultivating the space in front of one of the SNG entrances to become a new public recreation area.
  • To manage all this, and many other responsibilities, there needs to be more of us. That is why, since December, we have been busily recruiting new colleagues for various posts. We have predominantly been expanding our visitor services team, who will be ready to ensure that you feel comfortable during your visit, and who will be prepared for any situation.
