The exhibition Between Idyll and Drama uncovers the connections between naïve and professional art and, at the same time, presents the less well-known works in the Collection of Naïve Art at SNG to the public.
The Collection of Non-Professional (Naïve) Art is a SNG collection which contains paintings, sculptures, drawings and graphic art. It was created in 1965 when the International Department of Naïve Art was established. It was founded by Štefan Tkáč (1931 - 1989), who was also the founder of the international event Triennial of the Naïve Art at the SNG.
The exhibition presents selected areas of naive art in parallels and confrontations with the works of professional artists. Naive art, or rather outsider art, is often presented as a peculiar phenomenon, independent of the professional art scene. This exhibition sees naive art as an integral part of the development of modern and contemporary art. Various expressions of non-professional art are explored, from folk art, through naive style sculpture to dramatic visions created by extreme psychic states.
