Karol Pichler graduated from MOME - Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design, Budapest in 1985. In the years 1986 - 1996 he was a teacher at the Academy of Applied Art in Bratislava, but also in Reims and Rio de Janeiro.
The focal point of Pichler's artistic activities is free art. However, the author oversteps the borders between free and applied art and blunts them. His works often outreach to design, designer clothing, or jewellery. Within free art, he moves in domains of object, installation, site specific, mixed media, graphics - print, action, but he is interested in working with text and its coding, too. His media are mostly textile, paper, plastic, or even food; his principle (visual) play or manipulation.
Since 1984, Karol Pichler has been displaying his works at both individual and group exhibitions from New York, through Sao Paulo, to Kyoto. His works are parts represented in collections of both local and international museum and galleries, as well as in private collections. In design, he is a laureate of numerous international awards. In the years 1992 and 1993, he spent time at creative residencies to Switzerland and Italy. After 1996 he lived and worked in Surabay, Paris, Rio de Janeiro. Currently, he lives in Lyon, France. At the end of November 2018, Karol Pichler will stay in Ľudovít Fulla Gallery for one week to create his installation dedicated especially to the gallery, in which he will so typically of him encode one famous literary text and offer the visitor a key for decoding it.
